The 24-year-old will be making his 20th career oval start this weekend on the .875-mile tri-oval, having spent his early racing career predominately on road/street courses. Last weekend at Pocono he tied his best career oval finish of 15th and picked up 30 points to place him 20th in the standings with 196 points.
Commenting on returning to Iowa, Saavedra said, "We've been struggling on ovals, but Iowa seems to be a good place for the team as past history as shown. I'm looking forward to a good weekend as I have good history there also with a win in Indy Lights in 2010, so hopefully we can repeat that in the Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Inc. - KV AFS Racing car this weekend and earn some points towards the championship."
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Saavedra has been among the youngest drivers in nearly every series he has competed in. He joined the Firestone Indy Lights just before his 19th birthday and that year was awarded Rookie of the Year Honors with AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport. He moved to Bryan Herta Autosport for 2010 where he made his Indianapolis 500 debut becoming the third Colombian driver to do so. Saavedra then stepped up to the IndyCar Series in 2011 with Conquest Racing before returning to Indy Lights in 2012. Last year he spent the entire season back in IndyCar with Dragon Racing.
The race will be broadcast live on NBCSports at 8:00 p.m. (ET) and IMS IndyCar Radio can be heard on Sirius 213 and XM 209, check local listings for your local station, or listen at IndyCar.com or on the Verizon Indy2014 app.
